Decrease in Child Abuse

Between 2007 and 2008, child abuse cases decreased which was unexpected due to the increase in family stress because of the recession.

Cases of sexual abuse decreased 6%, physical abuse decreased 3% and child neglect decreased 2%.

There was an estimation of 553,000 children who suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse, down 26 percent from the estimated 743,000 abuse victims in 1993.
